Steve Mackey joined Pulp in 1988 and recorded and toured extensively with the British Art Rock band throughout the 1990’s until their extended hiatus in 2002. Motivated by his experiences in recording studios with production greats such as Chris Thomas (The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Roxy Music), Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies) and the legendary Scott Walker, Steve’s first foray into record production ironically were humble lo-fi bedroom recordings with the undiscovered Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam (aka M.I.A.). “Galang” and “Sunshowers” propelled her to immediate international recognition, a Mercury prize nomination and still remain some of her defining tracks. He subsequently recorded Florence and The Machines debut, the garage blues stomp “Kiss With a Fist” and tracks on her multi platinum album “Lungs”, selling over 3 million copies.
Steve has since worked with artists including the Palma Violets “180” and also Summer Camp and The Long Blondes debut LP’s as producer. Remixes for Kelis, The Horrors, Cornershop and The Kills. Pulp reunited in 2011 for a 2 year world tour culminating in the release of a single “After You” in 2013 , their first in 10 years, recorded with producer James Murphy of LCD Soundsytem.
Mackey regularly collaborates with his long time accomplice Jarvis Cocker both musically, on film soundtracks and also with their DJ collective, Desperate Sound System. In 2013 Steve toured with The Reflektors / Arcade Fire as DJ and in 2014 is recording at his own studio in London with Rough Trade artist Dean Blunt.
